Who is eligible for the NDIS scheme?

To be eligible, you must:

  1. Be under 65 years of age when you first access the scheme
  2. Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen who is a Protected Special Category Visa holder.
  3. Have a permanent or significant disability.

The NDIS will have a range of benefits for those who are eligible including:

  1. a fairer funding system that will replace current state funding systems
  2. choice and control; participants choose how, when and where they receive support
  3. long term, sustainable funding which will allow supports to change as needs change
  4. assistance to make informed choices
  5. safeguards to support participants in exercising their choice and control
  6. early intervention to minimise the impacts and avoid crisis point
  7. the opportunity to participate in the community
  8. information about disability services available including community resources and government programs.

Yes, aids and equipment for personal care or safety including beds and pressure mattresses, toilet and bathroom equipment, specialised clothing, continence needs and home enteral nutrition equipment will be funded by NDIS.

Your NDIS planner will ask you what support you need to live now and in the future. It’s important to list all funded and non-funded support you already receive, including from your family.
